Michigan 14, FSU 7

In a battle of Top Ten teams, the #4 Michigan Wolverines defeated the #9 Florida State Seminoles 14-7.  The loss was the Seminoles’ first against an MCLA team this year, and dropped their overall record to 8-2.  The Wolverines moved to 4-0 on the season with the victory. Michigan’s Evan Fox (4 goals, 2 assists) scored an unassisted goal 2:02 into the opening quarter.  Following the goal, the Seminoles received a three-minute non-releasable penalty for an illegal stick.  The Wolverines scored twice in the next two minutes to open up a 3-0 lead.  Following their third goal, the Seminoles received another three-minute non-releasable stick penalty.  Michigan added another extra man goal on the penalty to build their lead to 4-0– a lead the Wolverines would never relinquish. The Seminoles finally got onto the scoreboard on a goal from Nick Geppert (1g) with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter.  The two teams alternated goals in the second quarter, and Michigan took a 7-3 lead into halftime.  An unassisted goal by Robert Lee (1g) midway through the third quarter brought the score to 8-5, but a three goal run by Michigan crushed any hopes of a Seminole comeback. Michigan became the first team to beat the Seminoles in the ground ball category this year (47-28). The lone bright spot for the Seminoles was the play of faceoff specialists Lance Dunning and Brian Lombard, who were able to control 15 of 23 faceoff opportunities. The Seminoles will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. against the University of Miami at Pope John Paul II High School in Boca Raton.
