The Florida State men’s lacrosse team defeated Miami, Georgia, and South Carolina to win the Southern Shootout for the 10th time in 11 years.  Seminole midfielder earned Offensive Player of the Tournament honors with 10 goals and 2 assists, and freshman Nico Beskid earned Specialty Player of the Tournament honors by winning 33 of 45 face-offs.

“I’m happy that we were able to win the Southern Shootout for the 10th time,” said Seminole head coach Bill Harkins, “We’re grateful that the teams made the trip to Tallahassee for a great weekend of lacrosse.”

Friday, the Seminoles defeated Miami 15-7 behind 3 goals from Captain Brett Angerer and 9 saves from junior goalie Brad Chamberlin.  Sophomore midfielder Eddie O’Hara added a goal, assist, and ten groundballs to help the Seminole cause.  Miami’s Chris Gotcshall scored a goal for Miami, beginning a weekend performance that would earn him All-Tournament honors.  “Miami came out with good energy and effort,” said Harkins, whose Seminoles led 3-1 after the first quarter, and 5-2 at the half before scoring 7 goals in the third quarter to take a commanding lead.

Angerer had a huge game on Saturday, and his six goals led the Seminoles to a 13-6 win over Georgia.  The Seminoles dominated face-offs, with freshman Nico Beskid winning 12 of 13 faceoffs, and fellow freshman Bobby Sherlock winning 7 of 10.   Georgia’s freshman goalie Dave Lumsden was strong for the Bulldogs, and he would go on to be named Defensive Player of the Tournament.  “I thought Georgia showed great improvement from last year,” said Harkins, “but our face-off guys did a great job, and that made a big difference.”

The Seminoles closed out the weekend with a 12-11 win over South Carolina.  Freshman Will Goodman and Junior Garrett German each scored hat-tricks, and Captains TJ Dugan and Rolly O’Meilia led the Seminole defense in the tournament-clinching win.  “South Carolina had a lot of heart,” said Harkins, “They could have folded.  Every time we thought we had them down, they came back strong.
